Ecology

"The nation behaves well if it treats its natural resources as assets
which it must turn over to the next generation increased,
and not impaired, in value
"

Theodore Roosevelt

In this Ecology section we will record our observations about the natural history of Tāne's Rest. We are certain the property has some secrets it will gradually reveal and the more we learn the better we will be able to manage its restoration.

Secret # 1

On Saturday 16 September 2017 just before dusk we recorded a pair of New Zealand falcon, Kārearea, flying into our forest to roost for the evening. The larger female was leading and the smaller male was calling loudly with his distinctive call. Both unmistakable and unexpected this was a fantastic opportunity to see one of New Zealand's most majestic native birds. With harriers, Kahu, and moreporks, Ruru, present every day we have at least three of the four native species of raptors.  Visit Wingspan to learn more about these amazing birds.
